Merge PDF files
Join PDFs into a single document, such as a scanned form and its attachments, a report from separate chapters, or a month of invoices, right in your browser.
- Nothing is uploaded
- Free, no sign-up
- Works on phone and desktop
How to merge PDF files
- 1
Drop all the PDFs you want to merge on the box, or click it and pick them. On a phone, choose them from the Files app or your Downloads folder.
- 2
Set the order. If the file names start with numbers or dates, Sort by name does it in one click; otherwise use the arrows or drag.
- 3
Type a name for the merged file if you want something other than "combined".
- 4
Click Combine. The merged PDF downloads straight away and the originals are left as they were.
Features
Order by file name
Name files 01, 02, 03, or by date such as 2026-01, and Sort by name lines them up, with 2 before 10.
Private paperwork
Applications, IDs and bank statements are merged by your browser on your device. Nothing is uploaded.
Mixed page sizes kept
Letter, A4 and landscape pages each keep their own size and orientation in the merged file.
Works on a phone
Pick PDFs from your phone’s files, put them in order with the arrow buttons and save one merged PDF.
What people merge, and how to set it up
- A scanned form and its attachments. Many offices want one file: the signed application followed by proof of address, pay stubs or ID. Put the form first and the attachments after it, in the order the checklist asks for, so the person reviewing it doesn’t have to hunt.
- Chapters into a book or report. Long documents are often written as separate files per chapter. Merge them in chapter order, then give the whole thing continuous page numbers with add page numbers, since each chapter’s own numbering restarts at 1.
- A year of invoices or statements. An accountant or a tax preparer usually prefers one PDF to twelve. Merging monthly statements into one file also makes them easy to search for a payee or an amount.
- Job, school and visa applications. Upload portals often accept a single PDF per section. Merge the cover letter, résumé and references, or the transcript pages, into the one file the portal expects, and check its size limit before you upload.
Getting the order right with file names
Sort by name puts files in the order their names would appear in a well-organized folder, reading numbers as numbers. That makes a little renaming before you start the fastest way to order a long set:
| File names | Sorted order | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Chapter 10, Chapter 2, Chapter 1 | 1, 2, 10 | Numbers sort as numbers, no leading zeros needed |
| 2026-03 Statement, 2026-01 Statement | January, then March | Write dates year first, then month |
| March Statement, January Statement | January, March | Alphabetical only: April would come first, so use numbers for months |
You can still move any file up or down afterwards, for example to put a cover page first.
Merging on a phone
The tool works the same in Safari, Chrome and other mobile browsers. Files you received by email need to be saved to your phone first (in most mail apps: tap the attachment, then the share button, then Save to Files or Download). On a small screen, use the arrow buttons rather than dragging to reorder. Very large scans, hundreds of megabytes in total, can be too much for a phone’s memory; merge them in smaller batches, or on a computer.
Protected files
PDFs from banks, government sites and some employers are often locked. A locked file shows a warning in the list and is skipped rather than breaking the merge. To include it, open it in your PDF reader, then save a copy without the password, or print it and choose "Save as PDF" or "Microsoft Print to PDF" as the printer. A printed copy keeps the look of the pages, but links and fillable fields may not survive.
Merge or combine?
They are the same thing. People in the US tend to say "combine PDF", and in India and many other countries "merge PDF" is the usual phrase. Whichever you call it, the pages are copied into the new file exactly as they are, so text stays selectable and nothing is uploaded. For the opposite job, split a PDF into parts or extract the pages you need; to tidy the merged file, reorder or delete pages or rotate sideways scans.
Frequently asked questions
Is merging PDFs the same as combining them?
Yes. Both words mean joining several PDF files into one, page after page. "Combine" is the more common word in the US and "merge" in India and many other countries, so this page and the Combine PDF page use the same tool.
How do I merge PDFs on an iPhone or Android phone?
Open this page in your phone’s browser, tap the box and pick the PDFs: on an iPhone they are usually in the Files app (Downloads, iCloud Drive or On My iPhone), on Android in Downloads or Drive. Put them in order with the up and down arrows, then tap Combine. The merged file is saved where your browser keeps downloads; in Safari on an iPhone that is the Downloads folder in the Files app.
How do I get the files in the right order quickly?
Rename them before you add them so their names sort the way you want: start with a number (1, 2, 3 or 01, 02, 03) or a date written year first (2026-01, 2026-02). Then click Sort by name. Numbers are sorted as numbers, so "2 Invoice" comes before "10 Invoice".
Can I merge a password-protected PDF?
Not as it is. A PDF that needs a password to open, or that has editing restrictions, is marked in the list and left out. Open it in your PDF reader (with the password if it has one), then save or print a copy without protection and add that copy instead.
Can I merge photos or scans with my PDFs?
Turn the photos into a PDF first with Image to PDF (it accepts JPG, PNG and iPhone HEIC photos), then merge that PDF with the others. A scan that is already a PDF can be merged directly.
The merged PDF is too big for an upload form. What can I do?
The merged file is about the size of the originals added together, because pages are copied without being recompressed. Leave out pages the form doesn’t need with Delete PDF pages, or split the merged file into parts with Split PDF and upload them separately if the form allows it. Large scans are often the cause: scanning again at a lower resolution, such as 150 or 200 dpi, makes them much smaller.
