Add a watermark to a PDF
Stamp every page of a PDF with a word like CONFIDENTIAL, DRAFT or COPY, or your own text: across the page or in a corner, as faint or as bold as you like.
As large as fits on each page: 85 pt on the page shown.

How to add a watermark to a PDF
- 1
Drop your PDF on the box, or click to choose it.
- 2
Type the watermark text or pick a common one: CONFIDENTIAL, DRAFT, COPY and more.
- 3
Choose the layout (diagonal, straight, tiled or a corner), then the size, color and opacity. The preview updates as you go.
- 4
Click Download watermarked PDF. The stamped copy downloads straight away; your original is untouched.
Features
Never uploaded
The watermark is added by your browser on your device, so confidential drafts never pass through anyone else’s server.
Four layouts
Across the page at any angle, straight across, tiled over the whole page, or small in a corner or at the top or bottom.
Fits every page
Fit to the page sizes the text for each page, so mixed Letter, A4 and landscape pages all get a well-proportioned stamp.
Free, no limits
No sign-up, no page cap and no logo of ours added. Long PDFs are limited only by your device’s memory.
When a watermark helps
A watermark says, on every page, how a document should be treated. The common ones each have a job:
- DRAFT on anything still under review, so an early version is never mistaken for the final one when it gets forwarded.
- CONFIDENTIAL on board papers, HR files, pricing and contracts in negotiation: a visible reminder that the pages aren't for general circulation.
- COPY or DO NOT COPY on duplicates of originals, such as a copy of a certificate sent with an application.
- SAMPLE on templates, proofs and previews you share before a sale.
- PAID on an invoice once it's settled, so it isn't paid twice.
Choosing a layout
Diagonal is the classic: large, faint text across the middle of each page, hard to miss and easy to read around. Straight runs across the middle horizontally, which some people find cleaner on forms and tables. Tiled repeats the text over the whole page, so cropping a page or a picture on it still leaves the mark; it suits image-heavy pages such as photos, floor plans and proofs. Corner puts a small label at the top or bottom of the page, like "DRAFT v3" in the top right, when a full-page stamp would get in the way.
With Fit to the page on, diagonal and straight text is sized for each page to span about 80 percent of it, so a longer word is set smaller. In bold Helvetica that comes to:
| Text | Letter, diagonal | A4, diagonal | Letter, straight |
|---|---|---|---|
| DRAFT | 169 pt | 164 pt | 145 pt |
| CONFIDENTIAL | 85 pt | 83 pt | 66 pt |
| DO NOT COPY | 90 pt | 87 pt | 70 pt |
For color, gray at 25 to 35 percent opacity is the quiet choice and prints well in black and white. Red is the usual color for DRAFT and CONFIDENTIAL; at low opacity it turns pink, which is still easy to spot. Bold text holds up better at low opacity than regular text.
What a watermark can't do
It's worth being plain about this. A watermark added here is a label, not protection. It is drawn on top of each page as text, so anyone with a PDF editor can delete it, and its words can be selected and copied. It doesn't stop anyone from printing, copying, forwarding or screenshotting the file. PDF permission settings, such as "no printing" or "no copying", don't change that either: they're honored only by software that chooses to respect them. In a PDF you share, there's no setting that reliably prevents copying.
What a watermark does well is make intent obvious and leave a trail: a page printed with CONFIDENTIAL across it is hard to pass off as a public document, and a marked copy is easy to recognize later. If you need to know who leaked a copy, a common approach is to send each recipient their own copy with their name in the watermark text.
What changes in your PDF
| Part of the PDF | After watermarking |
|---|---|
| Page content, size and orientation | Unchanged: the watermark sits on top, see-through at the opacity you chose |
| Links, bookmarks and form fields | Kept |
| File size | A little larger: a single watermark adds well under a kilobyte per page; tiled text adds more, most with small text |
| Digital signatures | No longer valid: any change to a signed file breaks them |
| Password-protected files | Can't be watermarked until the protection is removed |

Frequently asked questions
Can a watermark be removed?
Yes. The watermark is added as text on top of each page, and anyone with a PDF editor can select it and delete it. It tells readers how to treat the document; it doesn’t stop them from copying it. If a document mustn’t spread, the only real protection is not sending it.
Will the watermark hide the text underneath?
Not if the opacity is low. At 20 to 35 percent, gray or red text stays readable through the watermark. Use the preview to check a page with small print before you download.
Can I watermark only some pages?
Yes. Choose "Some pages" and type the pages, such as 1 for just the first page, or 2-5, 9 for a few. Pages left out are copied unchanged.
Why does the watermark appear when I copy text from the PDF?
Because it is real text, drawn in the standard Helvetica font. Copying a passage that it crosses, or searching the PDF for "confidential", can pick it up. That keeps the file small and sharp, and it’s one more reason not to treat a watermark as protection.
Does it work on scanned PDFs?
Yes. A scan is a picture of a page, and the watermark is drawn over it like over any other page. Each page gets its own fitted size, so mixed page sizes in one scan come out right.
Can I add a logo or image as a watermark?
Not yet: this tool adds text only. For a business name, type it as the watermark text, or put it small in a corner.
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. Everything happens in your browser and the file never leaves your device. Nothing is stored, and the page works offline once it has loaded.
