Features
Private by design
The text is read by your browser on your device. Contracts, reports and records are never uploaded.
Readable output
Lines are put back in reading order, spaces restored, two-column pages read column by column.
Paragraphs or lines
Keep the PDF’s line breaks, or join lines into paragraphs and mend words split by a hyphen.
Honest about scans
Pages without a text layer are pointed out, so you know which ones need OCR.
How text extraction works
Most PDFs made from Word, Google Docs, a web browser or accounting software contain a text layer: every character, its font and its exact position on the page. The tool reads that layer with PDF.js, the PDF engine built into Firefox, then rebuilds readable text from the positions. Characters are sorted into lines from top to bottom, gaps become spaces, and wide gaps become tabs so that table columns stay apart.
What you get, and what you don’t
| In the PDF | In the text |
|---|---|
| Body text, headings, lists | Yes, in reading order |
| Headers, footers and page numbers | Yes, where they appear on the page |
| Two-column layouts | Read column by column (detected automatically, not always perfectly) |
| Tables | One row per line, cells separated by tabs |
| Scanned pages and photos of documents | No: they need OCR |
| Text typed into fillable form fields | No: it sits on top of the page, not in it |
| Words inside images, logos and charts | No |
To include the answers in a filled-in form, print the form to a PDF first: printing turns the field contents into page text. Magazine-style pages with three or more columns, text boxes and captions may come out with some lines in an unexpected order; check the result before relying on it.
Keep line breaks or join paragraphs?
A PDF has no idea of a paragraph; it only knows that one line ends and another begins lower down. Say a page reads "The parties agree to the follow-" on one line and "ing terms and conditions." on the next. Keep as in PDF gives you both lines exactly as printed, which is best for addresses, poems, code and anything where the layout matters. Join paragraphs gives you "The parties agree to the following terms and conditions." as one line, which is what you want when pasting into an email, a Word document or a translation tool. A blank line is kept wherever the PDF leaves extra space, so paragraphs stay separate.
Tips
- Only need a section? Choose pages and type a range such as 12-18 to read just those.
- Page separators make it easy to quote a page number later; turn them off for one continuous text.
- Comparing two versions of a contract? Compare PDFs shows the words that changed, side by side.
- Need the page as it looks, not just its words? Save it with PDF to JPG.
Everything happens in your browser, so the tool is safe for confidential material. To share only part of a long PDF as a PDF, use extract pages or split PDF.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the result empty, or missing some pages?
Those pages have no text layer. A scanned document or a photo saved as a PDF is a picture of text, and reading it takes OCR (optical character recognition), which this tool doesn’t do yet. The tool lists the pages it found no text on.
Why do some words come out as symbols or boxes?
Some PDFs embed fonts without saying which letter each shape stands for. The text looks fine on screen, but any program that extracts it gets symbols. Only OCR can recover it; copying from a PDF reader gives the same result.
What does "Join paragraphs" do?
A PDF stores text line by line, so pasted text often has a break at the end of every line. Joining puts the lines of each paragraph back together and rejoins words that were split with a hyphen at a line end, such as "infor-" and "mation". Headings, bullet points and table rows stay on their own lines.
Does it work with tables?
Each row comes out on one line with a tab between cells, so you can paste a simple table into a spreadsheet and the cells land in columns. Merged cells and cells with several lines of text may need tidying.
Is the text sent anywhere?
No. The PDF is opened by your browser and the text never leaves your device. Nothing is stored either: closing the page clears it.
Can I get the text of a password-protected PDF?
Not if it needs a password to open: open it in your PDF reader with the password and save a copy without one. If the PDF’s creator has turned off copying text, this tool respects that.
